Survey says. . .

As I mentioned in the post below, we just returned from a 5-day trip to Thailand. What I didn't mention is that we are heading back there in a few weeks for another 3-day trip.

This time, I landed in Thailand with a general sense that Thai food is good. But, when it comes to Thai cuisine, I'm a novice. I've only tried two dishes: Pad Thai and Thai Green Curry (both of which I love).

When it comes to vacations and food, I'm kind of a stickler. . . I like to know that what I'm ordering is going to be good. I don't like playing double roulette. As a tourist, one is already taking a risk on the restaurant; no sense doubling the risk by ordering an unknown, potentially gross item. After all, isn't one of the best parts about "vacationing" the guilt-free, delicious food? So, Josh and I usually stick to the crowded restaurants (usually a good indicator that the food is decent) and familiar menu items.

I happen to know that several of my regular readers are Thai Cuisine fanatics and I am hoping that said readers can help me out. When we return to Thailand in a few weeks, I want to approach the dinner menu with confidence. I want to branch out (this trip, I had green curry three times!).

So, here's the question: What is your favorite Thai dish? (You can give me runners-up, too, if you can't narrow it down to just one)

My favorite Thai dish is not much different from yours: red chicken curry. YUM! I'm afraid I don't branch out and try new things when I eat Thai because I'm like you: I know what I like, and I don't want to take a chance on the great chance to eat Thai food and then not like it. I crave red chicken curry at least once a week!

PS: Judi, your comment made me laugh.

Well, I'm certain the cream cheese and shrimp egg rolls at Tasty Thai don't count, but I do love them. They serve a fabulous dish with peanut sauce, chicken, and coconut milk served on a bed of fresh spinach that is divine. Darned if I remember the name of it, though...

In addition to Pad Thai (which is always good), I love something a local thai restaurant makes called Garlic Delight. It's basically your choice of meat or tofu cooked up with oodles of garlic, pepper, and is served with cooked broccoli over rice. Don't know if they have this equivalent in the actual country.

Another thing I love is Tom Kah (or, Tom Kha), a delicious sweet & sour soup made with cocunut milk and oodles of vegetables , lemongrass, citrus, and your choice of meat or tofu (I don't think I've used the word "oodles" so much). It is SOOOO delicious.

Swimming Rama is another favorite. Your choice meat smothered in peanut sauce, served over a bed of spinach and with rice. So good! I wonder if this was the dish to which kenj was referring ...

Happy exploring!! ;o)

Oh! I should echo the vote on the garlic and pepper dish Kirsten mentioned. I have a classmate who is a vegetarian and loves Thai, and he told me he always orders the Garlic & Pepper dish with tofu from the same place I love to eat Thai. So, I'm guessing it's good, though I don't speak from experience.

Ahh, it pays to have blog readers with such good taste! I have duly written down your recommendations and will enter Thailand armed with my list. I already feel more confident!

Mom, that was a good one! Haha.

Christianne, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only stuck-in-a-rut eater. Josh and I decided to strike a bargain: only one of us is allowed to order something new when we go out. That way we get the best of both worlds--tried and true, and exciting and new.

Kenj, believe it or not, I haven't been to Tasty Thai. I have heard good things about it, but the time I tried to go there, they were closed. But, when I do finally get a chance to go, I'm going to ask for the "fabulous dish with peanut sauce, chicken and coconut"

Kirsten, I knew I could count on you for oodles of good advice regarding Thai cuisine =) Thanks.

3PIP, spicy, yummy, slippery noodles. . . sounds good to me! Especially the spicy, yummy, slippery noodlely part!

Gee Gee, believe it or not, one of the best things we had in Thailand was pizza! There was this little Italian owned and operated restaurant called Jeseo's. If you're ever in Krabi, you have to try their Diabla pizza. It is a spicy creation that ranks up there in the top 5 pizzas we've ever had.

Fletch, since I am currently suffering from a head-cold-cum raging-middle-ear-infection, a bowl full of Tom Kha Gai sounds great!

Beef or chicken satay (skewered meat with peanut sauce, usually served with a vinegary cucumber relish) is extremely yummy. (Didn't you write a post about making this yourself in CA? Or am I imagining strange things?)

I agree about Thai soups being amazing. The one I've had is Tom Yum, especially Tom Yum Goong--prawn soup with lemongrass and straw mushrooms and kaffir lime leaves, among other yummy things.

(There's a wikipedia article about Tom Yum Thai soups, with reference to the closely related Tom Kha, here:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_yum)

The husband and I have also enjoyed a Mint Beef menu item as well as several of the other dishes already mentioned.
